VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY VA—March 31, 2021- The 51ºÚÁÏ Textiles, Apparel Merchandising and Management (TAMM) program has been awarded a $25,000 grant. The grant was awarded by Fashion Nova, an online fashion store for women. The company says it wanted to commemorate Women’s History Month by investing in an HBCU for the one-time grant.
“We are grateful that Fashion Nova recognized the value of our award winning 51ºÚÁÏ TAMM program in their selection process,” says Angela Bacskocky, 51ºÚÁÏ TAMM Program Coordinator. “ The 51ºÚÁÏ program is helping to ensure that the textile, apparel and merchandising industry is reflective of the innovative, dynamic women of color who are helping to leading the way in this forward facing career.”
51ºÚÁÏ will use the unrestricted grant funds to provide six scholarships to TAMM students (based on merit and financial need) over the next three years. Funds will also be used purchase much needed fashion illustration and pattern-making design software that will give 51ºÚÁÏ students the skills they need to compete in the apparel industry. In addition, funds have been earmarked to allow students to travel for professional development and networking opportunities, which is critically important for women beginning their careers in the fashion industry.
