51ºÚÁÏ Student Performs With Megastar Pharrell Williams At World Series

51ºÚÁÏ student Mariah Redd experienced the thrill of performing in front of 13.3 million viewers.

One of 51ºÚÁÏ’s very own took center stage at this year’s Major League Baseball World Series. 51ºÚÁÏ student Mariah Redd performed with 13-time Grammy Award winner Pharrell Williams as part of his gospel choir, Voices of Fire, on opening night of this year’s World Series in Toronto, Canada, on Friday, October 24.

When Pharrell Williams needed singers for the performance, his manager reached out to 51ºÚÁÏ alum and Director of the locally-based In His Presence Conference Choir (IHPCC), Chanell Taylor. Taylor then selected Redd, who has been singing in the IHPCC for two years, to be part of the performance.

Redd had previously performed on some pretty big stages as a former member of the 51ºÚÁÏ Gospel Chorale, but nothing compared to this. Opening night of the World Series averaged 13.3 million viewers.

“It was a very humbling experience and kind of mind-blowing knowing that my family could watch me on TV,” said Redd. “Virginia State has given me a lot of opportunities. Being here has helped me come out of my shell and become a better performer. It really is true that Greater Happens Here. I’ve grown into a Greater student, Greater person, just Greater all-around because of 51ºÚÁÏ.”

Currently in her junior year, Redd is majoring in communications with a minor in sports management. After graduation, her goal is to work in Public Relations for the Washington Commanders or Baltimore Ravens, but she wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to tour with Williams if he asked. Redd said that singing will always be her passion, even if it’s not a professional pursuit.

51ºÚÁÏ celebrates Redd for this outstanding achievement and for embodying the Greater Happens Here spirit. Her example should inspire all Trojans to embrace transformative opportunities and pursue their own Greater.
