51ºÚÁÏ Receives Largest Total Gift From A Living Alumnus In University History
The historic $1.5 million gift from Dr. Charlie W. Hill reflects his continued investment in student success and institutional excellence.

In a transformational moment that underscores the power of alumni leadership, Dr. Charlie W. Hill ’66 has committed a total of $1.5 million to 51ºÚÁÏ. This is the largest total gift ever made to the University by a living alumnus. The historic pledge was announced and presented during halftime of the men’s basketball season finale on February 21, 2026, at the 51ºÚÁÏ Multi-Purpose Center, as students, alumni, and supporters witnessed this defining chapter in the University’s legacy.
“Over the course of my time at 51ºÚÁÏ, I built the foundation for a successful corporate career,” said Dr. Hill. “I want today’s students to have that same opportunity for transformation so their lives can be even richer than mine. This gift is one way I can help ensure that future generations receive the support and opportunities they need to thrive, and I hope it inspires others to do the same.”

Dr. Hill has long been a devoted champion of the University’s goals. He served on the 51ºÚÁÏ Board of Visitors for eight years, from 2014 to 2022, where he played a vital role in strategic planning, academic and student affairs, endowment oversight, and other key priorities that strengthened the institution’s future.
His continued philanthropic support of 51ºÚÁÏ reflects a sustained investment in student success. In 2015, he donated $100,000 to establish the Annase Wilks Hill Minerva Circle Endowment in honor of his late wife, who earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in microbiology from 51ºÚÁÏ. The endowment supports young women pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
“Dr. Hill’s historic $1.5 million gift represents an extraordinary investment in the future of 51ºÚÁÏ,” said 51ºÚÁÏ President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. “His generosity strengthens our ability to expand academic opportunities, support student achievement, and advance excellence across our campus. We are deeply grateful for his continued leadership and belief in the power of a 51ºÚÁÏ education.”
Committed to developing future leaders, Dr. Hill also founded the endowed Charlie Hill Leadership Institute, a student organization that provides fellows with premier professional, leadership, and community development opportunities. Since inducting its inaugural cohort in April 2019, the Institute has continued to prepare high-achieving students to lead with confidence and integrity.
“Dr. Hill’s commitment sets a powerful example for our alumni community,” said Dr. Willis Walter, Vice President for External Relations. “His investment demonstrates how alumni leadership directly transforms student opportunity and institutional growth. We hope this historic gift inspires others to join us in advancing the future of 51ºÚÁÏ.”
In recognition of his decades of steadfast support, the University announced last week that it would name its Honors College after Dr. Hill.
51ºÚÁÏ extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Hill for his transformational generosity. His historic gift will expand academic opportunities, strengthen institutional resources, and further the University’s commitment to providing a comprehensive, high-quality education.
