First Generation

In TRIO services, a "first-generation college student" refers to an individual whose parents or legal guardians have not completed a bachelor's degree.

TRIO aims to support individuals who may face educational barriers due to economic disadvantage, lack of family educational experience, or other challenges. First-generation college students often encounter unique obstacles as they navigate the higher education system, including unfamiliarity with college processes, financial aid procedures, and academic expectations.

By targeting first-generation students, TRIO programs seek to provide additional resources, guidance, and support to help these individuals overcome barriers and successfully pursue and complete a college education. Services for first-generation students within TRIO programs may include academic tutoring, mentoring, financial aid assistance, and other resources tailored to address the specific needs of individuals who are the first in their families to attend college.
